The latter is unfortunately true for William Drake, the Marquess of Pemberton. The follies of his father, The Duke of Sunderby, have caused the entire Dukedom to be on the verge of collapse. When he discovers a secret affair has left him with an unknown brother, and the Duke passes away unexpectedly, Lord Pemberton (now the new Duke of Sunderby) is pressured to find a wife sooner than expected. Only one caveat - she must be rich.

Lady Georgiana, the daughter of an Earl, is fiercely independent. Her first Season came and went without much fanfare.
