"Why are you crying?' he frowned, swiping the tears that slipped down her cheeks.
His voice was quiet. It mingled softly with the crashing waves until she wondered if he even spoke at all, or if the brewing storm was playing with her imagination.
Her words burst out in a huff of air, pulled from her lungs desperately like he'd shoved his fist in her throat and ripped them out. "Because you don't love me back,' she cried.
His hand stroked her hair back from her face, his fingers fighting to push the idle strands from the harsh gull. She looked up at him, his fine features, too precious to be true. Eyes welling, her vision blurred. He shook his head slowly, concern pulling at his brow and he pulled her into his warm chest. The size of him was enough to block out the first drops of rain that had begun to fall, turning the sand a mottled brown. His skin was warm but hollow. As if she were hugging him in a dream. Feeling the soft kiss on the crown of her head, she wrapped her arms around the god and pretended, for a moment, that he loved her back.

His voice was kind despite his cutting words.
"Of course, I don't. Silly girl. I can't..." he whispered.
Lightning cracked and the hard rain began its descent. The water was startling cold and she held him tighter as he grew lighter and softer. His form faded until she found herself clutching air. Until he really was a dream, and the seashell that she clutched in her sandy fist was all she would ever have left of him.
