The story starts after the last book ends, where Cordelia rushes to Matthew's place to discuss what she just heard what James had said to Grace. Matthew reveals that this whole time that he had been in love with her, and suggests that she runs away with him to Paris. Cordelia is less enthusiastic about the idea of running away from everything she loved, her friends, and family.
