Arielle Farran has no business being a valet to anyone, let alone to Thorin Oakenshield, but she really has no choice. Her twin brother, Elen was actually supposed to take the position, only to have a serious injury throw a wrench into the works and lands them in serious financial straits. Either she pretends to be him, or they lose the only home they've ever known. Reluctantly, Arielle agrees and shows up at Erebor's gates as Elen and from the moment she meets the King Under the Mountain, she knows she's in trouble. It's only a matter of time before she gets caught, she just knows it.

Thorin doesn't really want a valet, but his sister Dis has decided otherwise and since it's easier to give in than fight with her, a valet will soon be his. But when he meets Elen Farran, he senses something isn't quite as it should be where he's concerned. But, since he can't just outright accuse Elen of playing false without any proof, Thorin decides to play along until Elen comes clean of his own volition.

Although he's survived the wounds he received at the end of Azog's blade, his recovery is far from complete. When she's asked to help the dwarves tend to their wounded, medical student Jasna Stoneham reluctantly agrees. Not only is she only just barely a qualified to even set foot in the infirmary, but she stutters when she gets nervous and nervous does not even begin to describe how she's feeling. To make matters worse, no one thought to warn her that she would be caring for the king himself, Thorin Oakenshield. Unfortunately, the road to recovery isn't necessarily a smooth one, but if there's one thing Thorin will learn, it's that what Jasna lacks in experience and training, she makes up for in stubbornness, giving him a run for his money. And for every backwards step he takes, she is there to push him three steps forward. And Jasna will soon find out that there is a gentle, softer side to the dwarf king, one that very few people have ever seen and one he fights to keep hidden from her as well. But like his recovery, that is also easier said than done.

He is on his way to the town of Bree, in search of his own father, Thráin, who has been missing for years. When he stumbles headlong into an assassination attempt, he is grateful for the boy who appeared as if from nowhere who comes to his aid. He has no idea that boy is the same little girl from Dale, all grown up now. He also has no idea that the boy he sees as a pest will soon become everything to him.
