Eleven-year-old Lena Luther moves in with her dad and his family and quickly hits it off with her adopted brother. But after an accident, she quickly becomes the family's punching bag, both verbally and physically. After Lex moves away, Lena befriends the two new students, Alex and Kara Danvers, who move into the house across the street.
Their mother, Eliza, immediately recognizes the signs of abuse, but Lena won't do anything about it, so Alex and Kara begin helping Lena. As Lena struggles to escape the hell that she's living, she starts to fall for the little blonde girl across the street.
