Some believed that whatever was out there, got to the unfortunate people while some think the group is stuck in some place and they can't get out. Older people would use this tale to scare off children wandering in the woods at night. Pranksters would sometimes report that they've heard the same strange sound described in the story; and this is why everyone starts to debate whether this narrative is fictional or real.
