To This Day

Fear bloomed inside my chest like
an icy flower. Talks weren’t exactly talks in this house; they normally ended
with bruises and black eyes. I didn’t move besides the small action of pulling
my mum behind me. Don’t touch her. Punish me. Just don’t touch her. I pleaded
with my eyes that were so much like mothers, hoping that he’d see reason. His
eyes narrowed and we held each other’s gaze, one pleading and the other’s cold
and unforgiving.

I turned my head towards the side
of the car, hoping to get a glimpse so that he could see the joy that was
evident on face, “Dad, its beaut-“

A shattering crash broke through
my words, sending my skin reeling in frightened surprise. Something impaled my
throat. Then there was pain.

“What was she really like?” she
enquired, blue eyes piercing my own, forcing me to look away.

“She’s worse.”

I felt myself pulled to her in a
hug and I buried my face into her silky black hair.

“She’s worse.”

Sky, Kat and Jasper. Three people with lives above the
ordinary mark, but not a good ordinary. But it is their problems draw them
together. After all, to this day, it still takes more than one to support the
other.
