There are plenty of things on Earth that exacerbate Maeve's anxiety: her graduate studies, her fizzling romance, her crushing existential dread. What isn't aggravating Maeve's anxiety? The threat of alien abductions. What should be aggravating Maeve's anxiety? One hundred percent, the threat of alien abductions!

Snatched by the Viatoram Republic from Oregon's coast, and sent to work in a mining colony on Ceres, Maeve must quickly adapt to her new life living among advanced alien species or face certain death.

Survival is her main goal until she meets Areet, an alien from Gliese. She knows love affairs are forbidden on Ceres, but if she's meant to serve the Republic until her death, then what's the harm?
