After Michael Freeman is outed on the night of his prom, things take a different turn. His life is turned upside down and people whom he thought were his friends, abandon him. Michael plunges into a world of loneliness upon his high school graduation.

His parents, being uncertain of what to do and confused on how to handle the new identity of their son, decide to send him to Ridgemont, a busy seaside town close to Los Angeles in California where they feel he should spend the summer with his cousins while he waits for college.
