واقع‌گرایی مسعود کیمیایی را می‌توان در ردۀ «رئالیسم انتقادی» گنجاند. فیلم‌های کیمیایی را می‌توان واریاسیون‌هایی بر روی تم «انتقاد فردی» برشمرد. قهرمان او «جاهل» پاک‌باخته و قانون‌شکنی است که از مکافات اخروی و نیز بر مجازات دنیوی چشم می‌بندد و شخصاً احقاق‌حق می‌کند. بدین‌سان در آثار کیمیایی رگه‌هایی علیه قشریت مذهبی و نظام حقوقی حاکم می‌توان یافت.
