A girl who went into the cave on a dare comes out changed.  

No longer a defective, weak, couldn't transform wolf shifter that never shifted, something broke the seal within her.

The others that dared her to venture into the cave came out with powers, but herself?  An ancient beast that was better left off sleeping woke up.

No one remembers why there was every couple of generations always one in the shifter group that could never shift.  It was considered unlucky genes for whoever it hit.
