I never believed it to be possible.

I never thought that one day... I would get to play on the United States Men's National Team.

Me... a girl.

Playing in a historically male-dominated sport.

Amongst the best of the best.

Against the wonder creations of God himself.

For the country I love so dear.

How did we get here?

...

Eighteen year-old Melanie Kavitz was a senior at Franklin High School in Seattle, Washington, playing for the all-male football team. Although she had the love and support of her teammates, her parents and her coach, the rest of the city hadn't been so welcoming of her meddling with their sons; an out-of-place princess who should've been on a cheerleading squad instead.

The lack of solidarity within the community never bothered Kavitz, or anybody else in her life - especially not when she was clear of being the best in the city. Maybe in all of Washington as well. Her talent was unmatched; she was unstoppable with the ball, and she left all those in her way in the ground.

A talent of her stature doesn't come every now and then - it's a rarity.

And the coach of the US Men's National Team knew that.

"Yeah, 'cause you're such a catch?" My brow cocks upward. "Wanna bet?" he shrugs, a taunting glint in his brown eyes. "An easy win," I retort, crossing my arms over my chest. "A competition," he declares, leaning back in his chair, his smug expression riling me up. "If, over these four months, someone-" "You," I interject. "Right... If it so happens that one of us, specifically you, catches feelings during our little 'relationship,' you lose," he explains, as though it's the simplest concept in the world. The captain of our soccer team, Xavi Parker, a beautiful, young, athletic boy. The college girls were obsessed over him and his boys. The boys were jealous of him and his position and his golden reputation, but not everyone was impressed by the soccer players. He's handsome, cocky and hot, and he knows it. Xavi Parker is aware, but why would a guy like Xavi Parker fall in love with a girl like me? The moment he told me, my life turned upside down. This boy knew he could get anything, anyone, but he fell for a girl like me. He cared about me in a way I couldn't imagine, a way I never experienced before, a feeling I couldn't accommodate. "Why do you care, Xavi?" He looks up and meets my eyes, not looking away. Xavi told me nothing, but the truth, that was one of the reasons I cared about him. I cared about him in a way I never cared. He does care about me, but can't place this feeling. I wasn't special and I understood it loud and clear. Girls like me aren't used to feelings like this, they aren't used to the feeling of love. It scares me, how long before someone takes this away? How long can he handle me and my dramatic past? He takes a deep breath, and he smiles, "How can I not care about someone like you. You're my sun and darkness, you're my heroin. You're it, Lun."
