Luke is popular, but he's not one to bully others. He likes to joke and laugh with his friends. But that's over when he goes home. His father blames him for his mothers death. And Luke believes him. He just wants to lose himself, and he does through drinking, smoking, getting high, or inflicting pain upon himself. It was his addiction.
One day a new kid shows up, Ashton Irwin, and Luke thinks he's beautiful, unlike himself. And one look from both boys causes Luke to get hooked.
