The multiverse theory, it's so simple and yet so complex. In short, every action ever taken creates its own timeline/universe in a never-ending loop. So in a universe that has freedom, there is also a universe where it doesn't exist.

Our story takes place in a universe that is devoid of freedom. At birth, your role is already determined. Those who have shown to be of greater character are dominants. While those whose character is lacking have no choice but to be pets.
A dominant receives a pet for one reason or another. Whether it be to train them or to own them.
