100 years into the future the government is divided into classes; the Keepers, the Overseers, the Manipulators, the Simulators, and the Commoners. Each year thirty six children are taken to become a Manipulator or a Simulator. Adam Gray Reis is chosen as one of the thirty six children and discovers that the system is keeping secrets that are probably best left untouched. Outside the safe walls of Berlington, Dakota Paley, a rejected Manipulator, tries to survive the growing riots against the system and the fight for life when the corrupted government fights back. She also finds out the haunting secret that the Sim tried so hard to keep when she happens to run into Adam Gray Reis.
