When Nova was born her mother discovered that her blood is black and not red.
Her mother knew that the Ark wouldn't except this but they already knew that she just had a baby so her mother kept Nova safe and made sure she would never bleed. 
Nova was a quiet kid when she was 12 and of course some kids bullied her for it.
