"You're not supposed to be here," Jungkook says. His voice is soft. Frighteningly soft.
"I never left," Taehyung whispers. He drops to his knees. His hands shake as they reach out but hover just above Jungkook's chest. Afraid to touch. Afraid to make it real.
"You should've run."
"I'd follow you anywhere."
"That's what I'm afraid of."
The flames flicker across their faces like the gods are watching. Judging. Laughing.
"Don't close your eyes," Taehyung begs. His voice cracks, raw with a desperation that sounds centuries old. "Stay. Please."
Jungkook blinks slowly, his lashes wet - not from tears, but from the smoke.
"I'll find you," he says, with a calm that breaks Taehyung's heart more than the blood ever could. "Next time. I'll find you first."
Taehyung presses his forehead to Jungkook's, breath stuttering. "You said that last time too."
"I meant it last time, too."
A final breath leaves Jungkook's lips like a secret.
And then the courtyard is quiet.
