A poem I wrote inspired by a song I had listened to that had some impact on me. The story mimics most of what was said lyrically in the song. I wanted to put a narrative spin on it to see how it would sound flushed out with some more details in the world. While still remaining true to the lyrics within the song

They call them Exelistis, a Greek word for The Evolver. One day the ground shook, and before anyone knew what was going on, they appeared. Bursting out of the ground, they wasted no time starting to scan people, and ultimately decided their fate. You were either judged unworthy and disposed of, or you were 'Accepted' and turned into a weapon. I saw as my best friend was murdered right before my eyes. Shaken up and unable to move, I knew it was my turn next. The machine picked me up, and with it's one eye, it looked at me and scanned me. Afterwords, it spoke "Chimera." What does that mean? The next thing I knew, I woke up, and my life was never the same again. A war had broken out between our own kind, separated by titles those mechanical things gave us: "Rejected or Accepted." (edit) I forgot to add that this started out as a confessional journal about becoming clean after a 10 year + addiction to OTC cold meds, but that was not my style of writing, I liked the material so I wanted to expand it into a novel length work featuring the journal elements. To say this work is a roller coaster would put it lightly. Although there are elements of time travel I would consider my sudden transitions reality travel. I use actual experience and dreams as a foundation, then toss in some fourth wall breaking narratives (meta-fiction), with a sprinkling of facts and quotations from songs and factual articles. It tends to be written similarly to an essay sans the boring. I have been influenced strongly by Vonnegut and W. S. Burroughs , and a wide variety of album rock, and that bleeds through. The tags dystopian and dark humor describe the whole piece best but there is a lot of genre jumping. I've done a good deal of research, not just for factual things but for the type of writing I do. Although not technically fan fiction, there is a nod to Final Fantasy games. The cover photo is a shared copyright, Brian Barbour took the photo, I added treatments.Complete

I've never been able to taste fear before, but I do now, it lingers in the air. Like a flame. Kindled by the president, fed by the citizens, and I'm the one who has to put it out. The extinguisher? All the countries and their citizens are efficient, orderly and obedient, and nobody seems to question the rules. But Ada Alexander struggles to keep her emotions hidden and she discovers more and more feelings that most humans have forgotten long ago, love, grief, anger, pain and fear. When the system glitches and she is able to cry for the first time ever, she feels tricked and robbed by the government, becomes inspired and develops a revolutionary plan to break the system so people can feel once again, and her family worries for her life.
