TLDR: Cryptid!Wilbur and a kid who seemed to be utterly devoted to the myth he had forged for himself

Scattering lights lit the city aflame. Nothing noteworthy nor noticeable about the whole ordeal to the discerning eye, but anyone who knew the signs well could have spotted him from acres away... Could have spotted πͺπ΅ from acres away.
It would be pointless to search for this strange character. Sure, ignoring the argument that it may be human after all may give you some moral ground to stand on, but tell that to the searing glare of a police officer and the cold slap of handcuffs. To almost everyone, this cryptid was off-limits. No matter the stories, the legends, the hundreds of hours poured into his existence by hungry fans just chomping at the bit for any sign, The notoriety just getting a glance at this creature would get you, nothing was worth the risks.
And that's not accounting for the disappearances of those stupid enough to go searching for it.
The Wayward One was the title that had stuck with theorists. Sure, a few others had been thrown around at the start of the sightings, but this one just fitted. At least, that's what Tommy believed.

Tommy had just recently moved homes. The one he left was one full of memories. Not good ones, but not necessarily bad ones, either. He didn't have much to live for at his old home, so he moved in hope of starting over and meeting new people. He had no more family, and his school friends had long moved on from him. In fact, the only number in his contacts was his mum's who was long passed away. Tommy was young (sixteen, to be exact) and he often forgot things. Usually just as simple as forgetting to do the laundry, or forgetting to reply to a notification on his phone that he received three seconds prior. Simple things that didn't matter. This time, though, he forgot to charge his phone before leaving his new, barely furnished apartment. He didn't think much of it. If it died, it died. No biggie, right? He figured he'd be alright for an hour or so without his phone. That is, until he got lost in the large, unfamiliar town that he definitely didn't even slightly know the layout of. He didn't know where he was or how to get back to his apartment, especially without a GPS. And then, when it definitely couldn't get worse, it began to rain. Tommy was soaked. He was cold, hungry. He cut into an alley and sat down against a brick wall, curled up on himself. He sat there for a while, and then heard footsteps. It was three men. The older one crouched down in front of him.
