The Mikaelson's were already at the top of the food chain, they were superior in every way possible, so having kids just meant that there would be more. It scared people. It scared them because no one wants to talk about how Niklaus is finally happy, how Matthias is finally at peace in his life with minimum stress, or how the rest of the Mikaelson's had found their own place in the world. Instead, people wanted to talk about how they didn't deserve that piece of happiness they found, they wanted to talk about all the bad things done and refused to see that what they were doing now was nothing but live their lives.
