In the world of Serna, magic is well-known and well-studied. Those who wish to bend reality to their will come to Sigilspear University, the best mage's university on Serna. Shadowcast follows Liza Hawken, an average girl from a small border town, who lies about herself to all of her new friends. This becomes harder and harder as close bonds are forged in the fires of academia. Perhaps if she lives this lie long enough, it will become the truth? Oh, and there are also some side plots about angel-demon custody feuds, an adorable trans romance, the struggle of learning in a system built for "normal people," and the looming threat of a banished elder evil crawling back into reality.

Some gifts are curses in disguise. Blur knows two things: how to vanish into the dark, and how to run from what hunts him. A half-elf with an unnatural affinity for shadow, he's spent years stealing relics and trading secrets-anything to outpace the ghosts of his past. But when Elara, a legendary mage as sharp as her reputation, catches him using his magic, she offers him an honest bargain: stop wasting his power, or lose it forever. Now, bound as reluctant partners, the two journey across a land where light judges and shadow saves. Elara drills into Blur the art of wielding darkness as an extension of his will, not just a hiding place. Yet the more he learns, the harder it becomes to ignore the truth-his power isn't just a tool. It's a hunger. And if he can't master it, the shadows he commands might just swallow him whole.
