Sabrina Verrun is a witch and the most gifted metallurgist her Hexen coven has seen in a century. Unfortunately, she has no interest in being a traditional metal-worker, repairing broken items and making trinkets to sell in the Hexen shop...she wants to create new things, things no one has ever seen before. While she dreams of devoting her life to her metal-working, her mother has other plans...she wants Sabrina to follow in her footsteps and take over as coven leader, putting aside metal in favor of assuming responsibility for the well-being of the other witches.

Sabrina has no desire to do such a thing, and as she fights for control of her own life, she's determined to create something that proves her research is worthwhile, earning her the freedom she so desperately craves. But as those she lives with manipulate her, ignore her, and treat her as if she doesn't know her own mind, she eventually turns her attention to the one place she's forbidden from entering-the Schwarzwald, a magical, yet deadly, forest ruled by the elusive and powerful Forest King. Eventually, Sabrina finds herself willing to go to any lengths to control her own destiny, and the choices she makes along the way affect not only herself, but her coven, other magic users, and one important life yet to come.
