To Manny, it means escaping reality, even just for a minute. 
As the only child of a very much not functioning,  realist bunch of parents, it is safe to say that he doesn't have the easiest of lives and barely ever feels understood.
As his parents again misunderstand his free spirit, they decide to bring them over to his grandfather over the summer so perhaps he will return to real life.
