She and Jack had never discussed it, but Jupiter told her that it had taken him years and years of training as a Witness to 'make sense of the madness', as he called it - to learn to understand the layers and threads, to sift out the important things and ignore the rest - and that Jack wasn't quite there yet. Eyeless Jack's girlfriend, Heather, went to MIT with Jack; studying to be an engineer while Jack was studying to be a doctor. They had started dating in high school, when Heather was a junior and Jack was a senior. By the time Heather had made it to MIT, Jack was already two semester's in, and when their three year anniversary came by; Jack proposed. However, only a few days went by before Jack disappeared.
