Living as a magical being in a world where magic is not believed in is easy enough.
Living in one where magic is outlawed and will get you killed is significantly more difficult. Ariana doesn't have a close family of her own but, when she finds one in a world that she isn't supposed to exist in, she will do anything to protect them and herself.
Protection is her aim and harming people just happens to be a part of the game but she doesn't appreciate the reality of it all.
