Opal Stone is a regular 13-year-old girl. Well, as regular as she can get. Opal only has her mom. Her dad left them in the hospital when she was a newborn. He practically fell off the face of the Earth. Opal's mom looked for him for years, but nothing came up. Now, however, her mom never spoke of him.

It's the first day of school, and Opal's caught staring off into space by her Math teacher. For punishment, she has to come to her classroom after school.
