Abigail thought nothing came after life, it would all just fade to black, which is exactly what she wanted. After killing herself she soon realizes that that is not the case. She is not supposed to be done on earth yet, and so she will remain on earth as a spirit until she finished up some loose ends, all the while we find out why she wanted to die in the first place.
