r/n's quirk involves sucking the life out of living things. this is a way of feeding himself, and normal food does not sate him. eventually, the plants that he has been using to eat no longer work. the self sacrifice comes in here, as rather than start using his quirk on living animals, he stops the problem at the root and "takes" himself.
