Alfred 'Alfie' Solomons Jr. is a 35 year old Jewish gang leader who resides in Camden Town, London. He runs an illegal rum distillery from inside of a legal bakery, also owning a jeweling business and protection rackets. Violent and unpredictable, but intelligent and calculating, Alfie Solomons is a master negotiator who uses violent outbursts and confusing language to intimidate and dominate everyone around him. He also happens to be the epitome of a workaholic, not that he'll admit it to anyone. Deciding to better his health, Solomons makes a very critical decision to better his businesses, all the legal and illegal. The outcome of his decision takes an unexpected turn, and the Jewish gangster, for once in his life, finds himself sticking to a plan in every aspect of it.
Lilly Baron, a very kind and generous 22 year old young woman looking to better her and her grandmother's lives, skims through the daily newspaper looking for a job worthy of applying to in this dull place of Camden. With encouragement from her grandmother, Lilly takes a huge leap of faith. Everything seems to be looking up for the young woman, but after making a discovery on her own, it happens to lead her into the dark world of Mr. Solomons' businesses, never having thought that things so wicked ever existed. Alfie takes it upon himself to shield her from it all as best as he can, and Lilly finds herself sticking by her boss, in every sense of the phrase, for better or for worse.
