Stella Watmas is failing in school, and her sister isn't helping, even though she tries. Denise has introduced Stella to creative writing, decimals, fractions, geometry, word problems, and all other things that might help her get a scholarship to a good private middle school. But nothing works. Their parents aren't around much for work reasons, and Stella isn't okay with that.
