At sixteen, Princess Brienna of Connaught is sent by her father to become ward to King Llewellyn, ruler of the mist-shrouded Welsh kingdom of Gwynedd. Her presence is meant to seal the alliance between the two kingdoms, but when she arrives, the King is furious that her father has sent a worthless girl instead of one of his sons, as promised. With war on the horizon, Brienna must convince King Llewellyn to accept her as his ward or risk losing everything she's ever known.
