That is because the USA miraculously survived when the apocalypse occurred. After the apocalypse, new nations rose and new continents. Knowledge about past civilizations and nations was all lost, but one nation holds all the knowledge. That is the USA. It's the end of Battle of Belleau Wood, but as the final Germans surrendered to the marines, a massive portal opened in the middle of Belleau Wood and in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The world stood shocked as the portal spewed out black creatures... Grimm. After the loss of an estimated 10,000~ soldiers the countries had decided to end this war and to take the fight to the monsters who wreaked havoc across the battlefield, not realizing it was a portal to a whole new world. Together forming the earliest version of the UN, instead called the 'United Monarchies and Democracies of the World' or the UMDW. By the time he succeeded in taking over the Commonwealth with the Enclave, he rendevous at the Appalachian Mountains where every Enclave main divisions will be meeting. They've planned to take back the entire North America wasteland to make America be reborn again. But Oum has other plans For Jaune, the Enclave, and their former allies.
