Rose Carson returns home after being sent to Illinois's Boarding School for Girls at the age 13, now being 20 coming back to her father and her 4 brothers in New York she notices the changes that have been made in the 7 years she's been gone. One of the biggest things that her family has recently adapted to is they hired a maid. Learning from her brothers about the maid that has yet to make an appearance to her, Rose openly seeks out for the girl and one letter was all it took for Elizabeth James to show her face. 

While finally having another woman in the house besides herself, Rose keeps her closeness to the maid despite the rejection that Elizabeth has given her but with every turn away Rose receives it only makes her want Elizabeth more but she knows that her feelings can only be kept to herself and only in the notes she writes but never gives.
