Despite this, life goes on below the ground.
Autumn Leaffall is one of the brightest teens who lives in the Soil, but she is more concerned with having fun than leading the future of humanity.
Her boyfriend, on the other hand, is as dedicated as you can get to the people of the Soil, and is one step away from being the head doctor.
Life isn't easy, but that doesn't mean they want it to change.
When a new boy enters Autumn's world, everything gets throughly turned over, and Autumn has to venture outside.

Their task is to set up a base on a supposedly habitable planet and prepare it for colonization. Although the planet has liquid water and a breathable atmosphere, it is believed to host only microbial life. However, upon arriving, Shawn and the rest of the colonists learn that assumption was grossly incorrect. In a brutal attack from rampaging wildlife, everyone but Shawn and four other colonists are killed. The five survivors retreat to the cavernous network beneath the ground seeking safety, but they soon come to a terrible discovery. These caves aren't ordinary caves, and they are no safer down under than they were on the surface. Of course she has fears of her own, but most of the time she acts as if it's nonexistent. Cassiopeia revolves her life around keeping this picture perfect image of herself, the girl with perfect grades, perfect hair, and the perfect life. That's what's always been expected of her, which is why, since the fourth grade, she felt infatuated by Richie Tozier. He's everything she's told not to be, and isn't. It made her wonder how he could do it all so easily, up to the way he speaks, and down to the way he acts. Which is odd to her, because she felt she needs to despise him. But instead, she spent her days in class sneaking glances at him, and getting any chance to talk to him no matter how nervous she gets. Cassiopeia tries her very hardest to hide her crush from the glasses eyed boy. That isn't the case for Richie, though his crush on the girl only started in the sixth grade, he flirts with her at any chance he's get's. Which isn't much, due to their completely separate lives. "Ciara always know that I was only trying to protect you, and love you as best as I could.", and then she takes a step back and disappears. I scream as I run to the edge to find my sister at the bottom of the hill, she has landed on top of a rock and there is blood around her feet. I quickly take off my shoes and make my way down trying not to fall. I make it to the bottom I grab my sister's head and hold her close, I then check for a pulse and I feel hope again. My sister still has a pulse, but she is bleeding out fast.
