Alex Rider doubts everything. A mission in Afghanistan led to the recovery of a drive that supposedly held security protocols, but instead, Alex discovers the names of 24 rouge agents on MI6's Most Wanted List. 

Emily Stone is more committed to her work than ever before. The girl who once questioned everything now seems to follow orders without a thought. Her compartmentalizing has taken its toll, and Alex no longer knows if he can trust even her with his suspicions.  

Their next mission is the most dangerous yet; terminate two retired CIA analysts and a retired MI6 assassin who were implicated in a plane explosion in 2013 and were recently spotted in DC. 

Before leaving for the States, Alex is told that Emily is compromised and is ordered to terminate her following the mission. Alex cannot begin to comprehend why MI6 would want Emily, one of their most successful agents, dead. 

But he is determined to find out.
