Astra's father is dead; her mother is a drunk. She grew up with two boys, James and Rook, since she was just a little girl. But her country wants to take them away from her-to send them to war. There's a higher chance of getting struck by lightning than both of them coming back breathing, and the thought of that makes Astra tremble. Everything about it makes her want to curse the government, the country, her misfortune-their fate. But soon, combined with her fears for James' and Rook's safety, she realizes that the war isn't the only thing that might take her family away from her. Astra must do what she can as a girl with powers she's still discovering in order to save her family from something worse than death.

He stuttered as he stared at her freshly turned wolf. She growled in response. "Doesn't matter, I'll break both of you." He smirked.
