This is the original opening to The Dragon Ring (Crooked Cat 2012). You can probably tell why any number of people, including some agents, assumed the book was for children. It's not, but I still love this scene.

But when the children find a mysterious portal in the middle of the mountains, they enter a land filled with adventure, dwarves and magic. Major themes in the Book include Adventure and Romance. This book is best suited for 12 - 15 year olds but I'm sure anyone older can get interested in the book. This is the First book in the "Mysterious Mountains Trilogy". Clay and Arianna
This is a prequel to a series I have already written. This story details how two characters met and interacted. They are Elves. Clay is interested in learning how to manipulate time in order to manipulate events for the best eventual outcome. Through Dreaming in the Void Fair Ones are able to visit alternate lives, therefore he and others have seen that Humans destroy the world with pollution etc. So he wants to make changes. Arianna on the other hand is the third princess of the Queen of all the Realms, she has compassion on Humans and finds ways to improve their lives. The story begins in 1135 AD and spans through to modern times and perhaps beyond. I have not yet finished the book. But there are Dragons and Fairies and Ogres to be had in the tale.Concluída

Mermaids, beaches, fairies! this place is awesome. someone then snatched the book out my hands. "Mermaids? what is this crap?" I looked up to see Cynthia and her clique. "why do you carry this thing around with you all the time?" I stood up and held out my hand. "give it back." "why? it's not like you can read it, you're stupid." Her words didn't mean anything to me but those words are going to come back to me tonight and punch me in the face. "How old are you? aren't you like 16 and reading this children's book?"
