This is the original opening to The Dragon Ring (Crooked Cat 2012). You can probably tell why any number of people, including some agents, assumed the book was for children. It's not, but I still love this scene.

When a large group of children find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere, different things can happen. But when the children find a mysterious portal in the middle of the mountains, they enter a land filled with adventure, dwarves and magic. Major themes in the Book include Adventure and Romance. This book is best suited for 12 - 15 year olds but I'm sure anyone older can get interested in the book. This is the First book in the "Mysterious Mountains Trilogy". [Aight so I've read 89574934935 phanfics since Christmas so I'm gonna give this a go] Fairies are good sprites. Faeries are evil sprites. When Dan meets Phil, a raven-haired boy claiming he's hopelessly lost in the woods, he can't tell if Phil is really human. Dan's seen every neck of this wood, and along with the trees come sprites - some good, some evil. Some sprites just like playing tricks on humans, some like to play with them, but others, specifically the faeries, try to make humans fall in love with them. Once they've got someone under their spell, they'll leave them with a broken heart - and some broken bones. So, Dan is hesitant to fall in love with the mysterious blue-eyed boy he finds in the wood. But when he does, his love is faced with the ultimate task: would he risk his own life to save Dan's?Terminé

Dan is sent to Kansas to spend time with his cousin Dorothy for the summer and when he gets there he sees that Dorothy is going to lose her dog Toto. When Toto comes back Dan decides to leave with Dorothy. But then a tornado comes and that makes them run back to the house and they end up getting sent somewhere else.
