Ava is a wanderer; a skilled ex-Easterling soldier who has been travelling Middle Earth for the past three years taking work where she could get it, and trying to wash herself of the sins of her forebears. When she is called to the Council of Elrond, however, the way of life she has known quickly disappears as she is introduced to the Fellowship of the Ring, including Legolas, a bitter elf who not only knows the crimes her ancestors committed, but was there when they happened.
