In a world where the darkness within oneself is a sickness, and becomes a concrete thing, destroying the organs, causing tissues to go gangrene , poisoning and mutating the body. A particular set of surgeon, if payed the right amount, are willing to search the darkness within the body, remove it completely, promising to then burn it in front of your very eyes.
Since the most evil and despicable acts are done consciously, there's a catch: the darkness within takes form only when the person is conscious, therefore, the patient must be fully aware and awake during the surgery.
Not the pubblic nor the the Print or even the government knows what happens after this darkness is removed. It does not help the fact that the surgeons categorically refuse to explain what happens before, during and after the operation, not even saying what or how a person looks like once everything is done. Some of them even denying having performed said surgery.

The Gory Details (Gross)
Between 2004 and 2008 I wrote a series of "Tips for Writers" for Nocturnal Ooze magazine vaguely about what would happen in real life if you did the things they do in movies but mostly about the gross out. I've always loved them and so have taken them out of mothballs for a new audience here on wattpad. They're all here except for #13 which seems to have vanished. I've also left them mostly intact except for a few very dated references that have been updated. The Second Stage
A world unseen dies over and over. It shrieks at a pitch that you cannot hear. It rots with a stench that you will never quite know. It isn't a place meant for you and I, it is merely a bank for the dead and dying; a vault of visceral agony. It's function, origin and purpose are as cryptic and chilling as the vengeful spirits whose claws scratch and teeth rattle just beyond the thick, putrid mist that seeps over its endless surface. Yet, through all the horrifying and inexplicable unknowns, this place has one certainty: it doesn't take kindly to guests. Meredith Haynes fell into The Second Stage during a routine surgery she was monitoring. She scrambled through it's empty expanses and fled from the decaying demonic mockery of a human being. With good fortune and great agility for a woman her age, she escaped with both her life and sanity, a miracle should miracles exist. Anyone of sound mind would never return, and spend the rest of their days in the company of friends and nights in the company of bright lights. However, Meredith met someone she never expected to see again, someone that might remove her from the ranks of those well advised souls that would never return. Every year, my town chooses a sacrifice for the demon that "watches over" our home. In exchange for a person from the village between the ages of 17 to 25, the demon protects our village. And because of that pact, our village is protected for the next year, under the demon's watchful eyes. No one knows what happens to those who the demon chooses, but there's a lot of theories about it. One is that the demon eats or absorbs those who are chosen - another, that it kills them. But this year, I'm the one who's chosen. I get to meet the demon I've feared since I was a child, and now that I'm 24, and am considered an adult, I could have left the village behind. But I didn't. Something inside me told me to stay. Now, I'm going to die. I just know it. I can't leave now, or run away, because the town would be unprotected for a whole year, and that's where my family lives. A Cut Not Deep Enough
So that was the deciding factor. It became my inspiration, my reason for resorting to such seclusion. I had always needed my own space for working, which is why even when I worked in the hospital I never allowed for a nurse or doctor or any other person to be in room, except me and the patient. I am unable to perform my work with prying eyes staring me down and questioning me, questioning my methods and maybe even questioning my humanity.
