Kevin McCormick wasn't really a great person, loads of people compared him to his father. He wasn't planning on changing any time soon, until a new family member came into his world, his younger brother Kenny.
When seeing Kenny, Kevin decided he will do anything it takes for him to have a better life than what he has and will try to keep him happy and safe.
