Annie has always had a passion for writing, ever since reading her first book her dream was to complete and publish her own. The only problem is that no one supports her decision, while her mum doesn't care what she does her dad is convinced that Annie can do better than being a lousy bookwriter, and her long time best friend Brianna thinks that both writing and reading is lame. Annie's book, The Fractured Night, was rejected by publisher after publisher and she was mocked for her failed attempts. Eventually she gave up trying to get her book published but continued to write books. But what happens when suddenly her dad who always doubted her, the kind old lady at the bookstore who helped her contact publishers and her best friend who always criticised her are killed and with each body is a chapter of a book. First Paul Tenny, then Bridget Peirtrough and now Brianna Ruell, a serial killer is on the loose and everytime a victim is found so is a note. Inside the note is a chapter from a book that the serial killer is writing called Difficult Dreams. If the police find the meaning behind the chapter they can find the next time, place or even victim of the killer.

Once upon a time, in a small Carolina border town, there lived a woman and her dead best friend's kids. Orphaned at fifteen, Mackenzie Temple can't exactly fly under the radar. People still whisper about those poor children that deceased, alcoholic mother left behind. To make sure her new surrogate parent doesn't regret her decision, Mackenzie sticks to two simple rules: Head down. Grades up. But when an evening of rule bending kicks off a chain of unfortunate events, Mackenzie's carefully constructed world begins to unravel. And that mysterious mountain boy isn't making things any easier. Meanwhile, her strange Art History class taught by even stranger teachers embarks on a field trip, taking the concept of strange to a whole new level. Was learning how to track evil creatures even on the course syllabus? With chunks of memories missing, Mackenzie's world falls deeper into chaos. For her little brother's sake, she can no longer hide behind her books. Facing enemies, old and new, she must act or lose the very thing she's tried so hard to protect. Secrets must be kept. Lies must be told. Monsters must be stopped.
