It is the year of 2042, and absolute monarchy has become the norm throughout the world. 

While most kings are obsessed with power, Richard Salvador, the king of Alcott, prefers beauty. The rich can afford to be "beautiful," and therefore live in comfort. The poor are looked down on, and often perform the laborious work in the kingdom. But then there's that in-between area: the poor with natural beauty. They are chosen to serve in the palace, for King Richard loves to be surrounded by beauty. 

Maud Lacouture, a stunning young girl, is in that in-between area. She was taken from her home at thirteen, chosen to serve the royal family as the queen's maid. 

Now, at seventeen, Maud is starting to realize that something odd is going on inside the palace walls, and she has taken a dangerous interest to the mysterious Prince Luke who supposedly killed his older brother to become next in line to rule. Better yet, Maud has to team up with this prince in order to solve a murder case. 

Meanwhile, the people, fueled by rage and longing, are ready to fight against the government. The carefully manicured beauty is crumbling, and the king is furious. Will the kingdom ever return to fairness and prosperity? And could the murderer be right under Maud's nose?

While I was in my own world I heard faint sounds behind me but I didn't bother to look or run away. The footsteps got closer and I was pretty sure it was Walker's men. I should run. I should try to fight. But what's the point in trying to run away? He would eventually find me and if he has his way he would most likely kill me. If this is my fate then why am I trying to fight it? I felt someone harshly grab my waist and pull me up and I complied. They dragged me down the alley and into the busy street. I heard the opening of a car and the next thing I knew I was being thrown into a car. My head hit the hard leather seat and the door shut behind me. Maybe this is how my life will end. Maybe I should just let it happen. Maybe I was destined to die alone as a no one. With that I let the darkness consume me.
