It is the year of 2042, and absolute monarchy has become the norm throughout the world. 

While most kings are obsessed with power, Richard Salvador, the king of Alcott, prefers beauty. The rich can afford to be "beautiful," and therefore live in comfort. The poor are looked down on, and often perform the laborious work in the kingdom. But then there's that in-between area: the poor with natural beauty. They are chosen to serve in the palace, for King Richard loves to be surrounded by beauty. 

Maud Lacouture, a stunning young girl, is in that in-between area. She was taken from her home at thirteen, chosen to serve the royal family as the queen's maid. 

Now, at seventeen, Maud is starting to realize that something odd is going on inside the palace walls, and she has taken a dangerous interest to the mysterious Prince Luke who supposedly killed his older brother to become next in line to rule. Better yet, Maud has to team up with this prince in order to solve a murder case. 

Meanwhile, the people, fueled by rage and longing, are ready to fight against the government. The carefully manicured beauty is crumbling, and the king is furious. Will the kingdom ever return to fairness and prosperity? And could the murderer be right under Maud's nose?

In the midst of all of this, life seems to be going perfectly well for seventeen year old Saylor Cohen in the new world she has found herself in. She lives somewhat of a double life. Her father is a spy majorly known for his role as a government official and they live a life of luxury and wealth. She seems to be adjusting to the new rules imposed by the government including attending compulsory government school while trying to live under intense secrecy to protect her father's secrets. Her struggles to attain any form of normalcy in her life soon ebbs away when her life is turned upside down as she is expected to entertain a guest she despises. She finds herself in relationships she knows her father would never approve of and worst of all, she starts receiving mysterious letters from an unknown source. She follows the promptings and instructions of these strange letters as they promise to lead her to some important information about a ground breaking truth that's been hidden from her.
