The main character, Lucien lives in a family with their numbers quickly decreasing every year, but one year it somehow spread to someone else outside the family and is forced to join the military to also help find a cure. being one of the only of a few mostly fine family members they're sent for the first time to the outside world on a mission with some new friends to come, and makes it their goal to better their system and stop the way that will bring them to a downfall at some point in their oligarchy.
