Thranduil knew that most in Mirkwood thought his absent Wife had been killed by Orcs in the battle of Gundabad so long ago, that most would call it farcical to even hold onto hope and keep her throne, but there was a reason that there was no grave. Neither Thranduil, nor any of his men had ever found Queen Lothuialdes' body. The search that descended upon the battlefield was thorough, but no corpse was found, and through this the king was brought the ever-sneaking suspicion that his wife had been burned after her death as a symbolic gesture of the utmost disrespect for the Elvish Kingdom.
However, through all of the impossibilities, however far fetched it may have been, there was always a tugging inkling of hope in his mind that maybe his Queen had not been overcome that day, that just possibly, she had escaped.

Mirkwood (Thranduil and Tauriel post-BOTFA)
The relationship between Thranduil and Tauriel after the Battle of the 5 Armies. How Tauriel is dealing with the aftermath of the battle as she goes back to Mirkwood and realizes that she has always wanted Thranduil's love and affection in her life. It turns out there has been more behind their turbulent relationship than they let themselves believe. The story follows their relationship from the days and weeks after the battle to many years later, during the events from LOTR and after. I absolutely loved their chemistry in the Hobbit and this is my first fanfic. I tried to keep the characters as close to the movie versions as I could (since Tauriel only appears in the movies and Thranduil's personality is only vaguely presented in the books). I am also including info about what happened to Thranduil's realm after the Hobbit from the LOTR book appendices... The Elvenking is like a very strong, old tree, deeply rooted in the kingdom he pledged himself to protect. He also pledged himself to protect his heart from love, out of fear that it might weaken him, but that proved to be disastrous. Love... what daunting word rubbed in his face by that fearless redhead elleth during the battle in Dale. Is there any love left in him? Follows what happens with Thranduil and Tauriel after BOTFA, during the War of the Ring and further into the 4th Age. Mainly from Thranduil's POV and including canon events that are only briefly mentioned in the books. I try to respect the lore as much as I can. Apart from the romance, I wanted to explore Thranduil's character based on what we know about his life.
