Shuichi -when he is a kid- lives with his parents and his uncle in Japan before they had to move to America, where he left his only childhood friend, Kokichi. Years had passed, and ever since he had moved overseas, Kokichi had made some new friends: Maki and Himiko. (First book of the trilogy) Kokichi, a kind, extroverted boy, moved out to a new city and dropped out in a new school: Spring Field Academy, he quickly made friends here and became one of the popular students, but soon after a few weeks, he notices that one of his classmates is left out from everybody else.
