What happens is that your soul merges with Passive!Nightmare and Corrupted!Nightmare, so they are now your buddies for life but in ghost form. God... kill you now (again), you never knew you were going to sign up for this when you died.

When Ink is exploring the au's, he stumbles upon a new au where he meets a new friend named Nightmare. The both of them create a close bond, and Nightmare explains how the villagers mistreats him and how they treasure Dream. Ink knew Dream for awhile, but Dream never mentions Nightmare.
