She is resigned to the inevitability of marriage, but secretly dreams of publishing poetry under a male pseudonym. • Clara Whitmore (19): The new companion to the Dowager Lady Ashcombe, hired to read, write letters, and keep her company at the grand Rosefield Hall. Clara is intelligent, observant, and has a peculiar habit of leaving pressed violets in the pages of books. She's from modest means but carries herself with quiet defiance.
