The night James and Lily Potter died there was not just one but two children present, but Hagrid only has time to save one. He chose Harry as he was believed to be the chosen one. But he's not.

Athena knows who she is, because before lily died she cast a spell to lock this memory In place so that when her daughter is old enough she can go to Hogwarts and fulfill her job as the chosen one.
