Willa Taylor has never felt at home in her suburban Vermont town. Tired of her parents' strict expectations that she has never desired to live up to, she decides it's time to make a home somewhere new for herself and her son, Jack. When Willa comes across a listing for a vintage farmhouse in a rural part of the state, she jumps at the chance to move away and start over. While she and Jack are adjusting to their new home, Willa decides to take on the task of remodeling parts of the old house.

Samuel Clayton, a contractor/construction worker, is introduced to Willa to help her with the project. Referred to by many as the small town's "eligible bachelor," Sam is quiet and reserved. Remodeling this farmhouse is just as personal for him as it is for Willa, and he can't seem to open up to her, or anybody, about it.

The more time Willa and Sam spend together, the more they are drawn towards each other, letting down the walls that they have built up over time. Sam wants to help Willa process the trauma she has endured from her parents, and Willa wants to allow Sam to imagine a hopeful future, as things are not as picture perfect with him as they appear. Can Willa and Sam reconstruct their ideas of what makes a home and builds a family?

Through laughter, heartbreak, grief, and love, The House That Built Me is a moving story that explores two peoples' journeys to find home again.
