Lyra is found lost in the woods by the queen who decides to take the child as her own. While the king objected, he knew the queen was never able to have her own children. When he finally agreed, he had one condition, the girl as she grows up must show that she can become the next princess and possibly queen through a series of tests. If the princess fails, she will forever be one step away from actually ruling the kingdom.
